The Making of "Clubs: Heart of a Hero"
Let me tell you, this book was an adventure from start to finish. From coming up with names for my characters, to deciding what path they were going to embark on, to choosing a cover for my latest creation. It wasn't always easy, but oh so much fun. Let me share with you a little bit about how Clubs came to be.
Where did the idea come from?
The idea for Clubs actually came from watching one of my favorite television shows about a group of exceptional police officers in Canada, and the unique and challenging situations they are called out to deal with.
One evening the thought occurred to me, "What would happen if you combine a SWAT team and a Special Forces unit?" From there the idea just took off.
Within a day or two, I knew why I wanted my story to be about and the main challenge they faced. Drew and Roxy Slater quickly became my best friends as I began to put into words the story I wanted them to tell.
How long did it take me to write Clubs?
From the first draft to final project it took me about two years to write Clubs. The process may have been long, but I learned so much along the way and can't wait to implement the new skills I have learned with my next novel.
Is Clubs a standalone book, or part of a series?
Clubs is the first book in my new "Slater's Deck" series. You will get to follow Drew, Roxy, Ava, the Panthers, and Ten-David for several more books to come. Don't worry, their story isn't anywhere near over yet!
What is the Combined Forces Operators?
The Combined Forces Operators (CFO) is a new division of Special Forces. The teams are made up of men from each branch of the military who have proven themselves to be exceptional operators. Drew's unit, the Panthers, consists of Marines, Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and even an Airman from the Air Force.
What is the Quick Response Team?
Clubs takes place in Baltimore, Maryland. Their SWAT division is called the Quick Response Team (QRT). Ten-David is the top team in Baltimore's SWAT/QRT.
How did I pick my cover?
The cover was actually one of the easiest things from my end. I worked with a photographer to help pull together different elements of the story. Once the picture was approved they then put together my completed cover design.
So, from my end, the cover was easy. Maybe not so much for my designer, but she did a fabulous job!
How did I handle the editing process?
I have been blessed with a wonderful group of people who help me fine tune my writing. All throughout the process these women would read through the book and offer insight, as well as edit each chapter as it was finished.
Once the manuscript was completed they went through the entire thing to assist with grammar, continuity, general readability, and to provide suggestions where they felt necessary. Without their help Clubs would not be nearly the book it ended up as. I am very grateful for their time, dedication, and investment into Clubs.
The adventure has only just begun...
Clubs has been such a joy to write. There were times along the way I would laugh or cry with my characters. But, the adventure has just begun. There is more to Drew and Roxy Slater's story and I can't wait to share the continuation of their story in my next book.
I do hope you have as much fun reading Clubs as I did writing it!
